Also if yout in a small plane trailing a big one on approach, you can touch down after the point where the big guy's nose wheel touches down. You can just aim for a farther point down the runway or you could come in with a side slip.

youre correct dude, Im a pilot myself, they teach you in school to lift off before the point where the heavy jet did it, and try to outclimb it.. yet we know its impossible since a small airplane can never outclimb a jet, so the best thing is to wait at least 3 to 5 min after the fatso took off to give it a try.. I hope I never get the chance to experience what your dad did, I might not survive as he did...

it help us visualize why many aircraft have crashed when landing after a heavy jet, and its a powerful reminder not to do it...

So...
What does it help solve exactly?

that is insane
amkuc27 (November 21, 2008 at 3:56 am)
Probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Fluids&Aerodynamics is amazing.
GooseGrl172 (November 17, 2008 at 7:30 pm)
Sorry, but NKS is correct, it's originating from the starboard wing.

of corse i was just trying to use comic releifbut i just realised it wasn't funny at all :P

No-one cares about the word, it's the meaning that matters.
cjracer1000 (November 13, 2008 at 11:14 pm)
Well in America(which most of us on Youtube are from) we call it counter-clockwise.

My father used to be a pilot of light aircraft many years ago and one day took his friend up for a flight over the home town. He took off after a large aircraft before him and got caught in the vortex which subsequently flipped his aircraft over. Dad, being an experienced pilot, said that it was very frightening. His friend, who openly admitted to dad that he was a little scared by flying and had to be encouraged for weeks to do it to get over his fear, shit himself. Like, touch cloth style.....

Sry d1rcwill - you're wrong. The vortex you see in the video comes off the right wing.
NKS969 (October 31, 2008 at 12:35 am)
Stucollet, you're correct. I'm not sure HOW d1rcwill is looking at this but he has it backwards. The test tower is off the right (starboard) wing at the time the acft passes by.
d1rcwill (October 30, 2008 at 9:39 am)
Nope. You're still wrong. The air away from fuse above the wing, and towards the fuse under the wing (though by this time it's behind the wing). On the port wing that's anticlockwise (viewed from the rear).
d1rcwill (October 30, 2008 at 9:36 am)
You've got it backwards. Air rises off port wing, moves away from fuse, drops moves inwards, and rises. From the rear this is anticlockwise. So it's the port wing.

lol ... freaky
NKS969 (October 28, 2008 at 12:11 pm)
PORT is the left side matie.....This rotation is counter clock wise. Therefore it's indicitive of WTV off the STARBOARD (right) wing. Air flow comes out from the bottom of the wing and rotates upward and inboard. A 'PORT' (left) wing tip vortice would be viewed as 'clockwise' from the rear......You dig?
d1rcwill (October 25, 2008 at 11:54 pm)
It's rotating the right way for the port wing. Look at some diagrams that show WIG and you'll see.

I'm not sure about the portal bit. But flying into it will definitely produce some bumpy results!
