I'm sorry but this is a really ignorant statement. It's OK to say you didn't like it,but "awful"?! Johnny Coles sounds beautifully. You should take the time and educate yourself about jazz trumpet and then check out Johnny Coles again.
Peace

I agree - that record made me become a fan of Jazz
IommiSabbath1 (December 30, 2008 at 8:58 pm)
Cole was quite ill when this was recorded/filmed - he had to return home. Perhaps that explains his short comings on this. Mingus would not have hired a 'bad' trumpet player.
japa1990 (December 24, 2008 at 12:37 am)
not so terrible because he is playing with mingus. If you listen to his albums he kinda moves jazz into a more avant-garde "free jazz" style. But who knows... he might be trying Mingus' sound or style or maybe he really is bad..
BaronVonRockenstein (December 23, 2008 at 9:53 pm)
I second that. He's hit and miss.
Daedris (December 13, 2008 at 9:41 am)
Wow that trumpet player is awful. His tone is terrible.
jlflores06 (December 9, 2008 at 12:59 am)

Charles Mingus is my favorite Jazz composer. Has anyone listened to Black Saint and the Sinner Lady album? The best Jazz album ever in my opinion.
RattLEHeaD616 (November 25, 2008 at 5:01 am)

jifted (November 21, 2008 at 11:20 pm)
You twit, why would you even think about attempting to belittle Mingus? It slipped, it happens.
BAJJMiller (November 21, 2008 at 2:17 am)
It's amazing, not many people have a large range of interests. Personally, I like jazz, but I also like Prog Metal.
Rafo28579 (November 20, 2008 at 11:31 am)
Amazing.

Best upright bass or best upright walking bassist? I've met a few bad ass bassist who couldn't walk upright...
Widmerpool99 (November 16, 2008 at 12:20 pm)
Don't you go lecturing me about touching uprights, you cheeky beast. Not mention bits of rubber to aid friction.
icwutudidtharr (November 16, 2008 at 12:04 pm)
You've obviously never touched an upright in your life. They tend to slip quite easily on a slippery floor like that. Most bass players these days have some sort of thing like a rubber disk they can put on the floor so their bass doesn't slip. They also may have a rubber ball on the end of their stand or many other different non-slip things.

Christ, Mingus, couldn't you learn to hold the thing before you started? It's just a big ukulele, after all. If George Formby could manage it....
