This is real bad police work. There was a good possibility he could die. Then there would be no case and a helluva lawsuit against the police department for taking some one's life, because in Spain you don't get life for a robbery.

Hand grenades have pins. When the pin is removed, you throw them. When they stop moving, they explode. Unless he pulled the pin while flailing in mid-air, I don't think it would have gone off.
