No, the U.S government never gave any chemical weapons to Iraq. Some U.S. chemical materials made their way to Iraq by way of German/Singaporean/Dutch/etc. civilian companies, but our government had nothing to do with that. And yeah, the CIA supported the Contras, but the Soviets supported the Sandinistas and nobody seems to care. It was all Cold War Realpolitik.

We sold them conventional weapons AND illegal chemical weapons. The Sandinistas were brutal and so were the Contras... but none more brutal than the CIA.

Yes, we sold weapons to Iraq, but we also sold them to Iran ('Iran'-Contra Affair). But they were conventional weapons. Iraq got the materials to build chemical weapons from civilian companies in Germany and other Western European countries. And as bad as the Contras were, the Sandinistas were worse. The UN at the time said that the Sandinistas were behind most of the war crimes. After the war people came forth saying that the Sandinistas had committed war crimes. But it's a catchy tune.

Great history lesson. I would have liked to have seen Rumsfeld shaking hands with Sadaam the day after Iraq used chem weapons on Iran. That's right - the US Govt. sold Iraq illegal WMD's in the 1980s and our press/government buried the story. However, they did use the dramatic film footage of the chemical attack years later as propaganda for the run-up to the Iraq War. Details of the attack were conveniently left out. Hey Murdock! You better censor this cartoon before people learn real history.
