Able Seamen

I sailed as a Deck Officer and I never heard of "reading a cargo hold." Is this an uncorrected mistake?

Same thing. Able Seaman = Able-Bodied Seaman. I don't know why they dropped it, but both terms are used generically for the same position now. In practice aboard ship, they are usually just referred to as "AB's". And yes, it is still one step up from an OS.
