Spike Jones featuring Mickey Katz (1947)
This clip gives us a rare and wonderful look at Spike Jones hilarity, with the added delight of seeing Mickey Katz (the short, bald guy playing clarinet) goofing around with the band and even doing his trademark "glugg-glugg". Mickey went on from there to write his Yiddish parodies and the rest is history,

lol, and people say that black folk cannot be racist because they are black.
that's unfortunate.
LDF, keep your racism to yourself.
maybe listening to a little marvin gaye and chaka khan will make you pause with humility at true talent, which at this time, cannot be replicated by the current crop of performers.

Someone once on a radio show about Spike Jones remembered that in his stage show for a while he would have a girl come out and sit on one side of the stage and knit all through the craziness. People would wonder what she was doing there and what she was ever going to do, and all she did was knit. I think I saw her once in a Spike video knitting, but haven't seen her on Tube yet.

Your answer is really light. What wouldn't we read if someone had written "Fucking black people"!But hush, I'm already subversive and politically incorrect.

very good -none of you mentioned his being the uncle of sigourney weaver...she was still in the deep end of the gene pool then.

Doodles Weaver also had a series of "shorts" on early TV called "A Day with Doodles"

The man on Mary's right at 1:36 (who also delivers the seal's bark) is Winstead "Doodles" Weaver, who became famous in Spike's band for his interprtations of the "William Tell Overture" and "Dance Of the Hours", and appearing on his Coca-Cola radio show as "Professor Feetlebaum". At 1:53 is A. Purves Pullen, who was a professional bird impressionist and was known in Spike's outfit as "Dr. Horatio Q. Birdbath".

I thought that was Deforest Kelly in the beginning, and once I read the comments here it confirmed that. Useless trivia: he was friends with George Reeves (Superman). Back to topic, Spike was fantastic as were the members of his troupe.

Will I see my deceased husband zep meissner run around with the clarinet and laugh... he was the best musician of all time.
trooper7h (June 5, 2008 at 4:44 pm)
ooops!I just googled Mary Hatcher and it was Mary in the clip - in her first big role in the film 'Variety Girl'.

Hmmm!Looks and sounds like a very young Kathryn Grayson to me. :)But regardless who - she went along with the sketch brilliantly. It brought back memories of the 5penny seats at the Regal cinema...

Lets see if any of you out there remember who the guy was who said "this girl has a good voice"? Try Dr. McCoy(Deforest Kelly)from Star Trek.
loyaltubist (March 20, 2008 at 11:04 am)
Best known for her role as Mickey Rooney's girlfriend in "The Big Wheel" (1949).
Juliaflo (March 17, 2008 at 2:20 am)
And now for some more trivia -- which one of the 'City Slickers' has a niece who was a 'Working Girl'?
aladaube (March 16, 2008 at 9:58 pm)
Just uproarious. My 8-year-old loves this, and so do I. True artistry at work.
bigband98 (March 16, 2008 at 8:24 pm)
Too Easy. His son is Joel Gray and his grandaughter? Jennifer Grey.
Juliaflo (March 15, 2008 at 9:56 pm)
Okay, trivia time -- who is Mickey Katz's celebrated granddaughter?(Here's hoping you had the time of your life with this question--HA, HA).
GreedyHughes (March 14, 2008 at 12:01 am)
