Tricky - Black Steel

Cover of an old Public Enemy track, takenfrom his album "Maxinquaye." The lyrics seem to have an even greater meaning now than when originally written...

I like both, but think this is an easier listen.
It's a good cover, obviously the lyrics are PE, but I'm pretty sure it says that on the inlay, and the sound is totally different, beats the hell out of most covers of good songs.

it's not better or worse than original. it's not brit pop in any way Those who can see the difference between trip-hop and any kind of pop or pop rock or between an interesting bassline and a dull repetition of stock samples and loops that kills your ears should know this.
It's not a bad cover, just different. it has it's own qualities.
PE had the raw power, this has a dreamy atmosphere. different music for different people.

I am familiar with the original Public Enemy version and this version.

Hmm, let's see: They have the same lyrics, and therefore carry the same message, so I'm not going to get into that.

This version has some better music to it, so that's a plus. Not being a fan of either PE or Tricky, I think I can safely say this.

Then we can add the subjective comparison based on liking male or female vocals better. I won't do that, but I will point out that Topley-Bird sounds a bit more understandable.

LOL! what a great comment. Flav went from respect to an absolute buffoon. Also I believe Tricky is paying homage to Public Enemy not trying to "do" them,

If you scavenge the internet, there's actually footage of Chuck D performing this song with Tricky. So I'd say that this version is officially sanctioned by the man himself. Try searching 'Tricky "Chuck D"' on Youtube.

Pre Flava Flav of Love I might have agreed. Now, not so much.

I'm sorry, but only Public Enemy can do Public enemy. There is only one and this is clearly not it.

I would marry Tricky, no lie :P

I FUCKING LOVE this FUCKING song! GRRRR FUCK!!! sorry =]

Mollkatles your waaay off the mark. You obviously know little or nothing about Tricky or the British trip-hop movement. You probably think Tricky is the chick in this video. It aint, Its Martina Topley-Bird. Tricky is a dude. Try listening to Tricky's Pre-Millenium Tension and us it's 'vanilla' or 'pop'. Probably the darkest album you're ever likely to lend your ill-informed ears too.

It's correct if you are a 38 yr old clown who just recently heard the song and choose to comment on it over a decade after its original release! Chuck D is a fan bitch!!!!!
0alstonw0 (October 29, 2008 at 1:02 am)
You fucking clown! I'd comment on your taste but you haven't listed anything relevant! Step of grandpa
mollkatles (October 29, 2008 at 12:57 am)
listen, the last thing I want to do is debate an opinionless drone about a sappy chick version of a man's song.what is clear to me is that you are either a lady, or and extremely effinate boy, because no man is saying this cream puff of a song is ground breaking or innovative.

so go back to your critic's choices junior and repeat them all over youtube as if they are your own opinion and know this much: this is not a question of personal taste, "your opinion" is wrong, mine is correct
0alstonw0 (October 28, 2008 at 10:09 pm)
The fact that you would relegate this to some pop-Britney Spears status shows that you are a fucking delusional! And I've got your "jr" hanging low!!!!!
0alstonw0 (October 28, 2008 at 10:07 pm)
Mother fucker you have got to be kidding me writing this shit! 1880's?!?! When this whole album was released it was ground breaking and no one had to tell me that because I have taste and recognize greatness when I hear it
mollkatles (October 28, 2008 at 6:42 pm)
innovative? unless this was recorded in the 1880's there is nothing innovative about it - it is a forgettable vanilla/bland pop rendition of a great song.a bit of advise junior, stop letting critics hand you your point of view, it is okay to think for yourself, though your comments make me wonder if you allow others to think for you because thinking does not come easily for you?

and why the rage? a dumb point of view is dumb softly or yelling - dummy!
0alstonw0 (October 28, 2008 at 10:36 am)
You fucking clown!!!!!!! You clearly have no fucking taste in music! You act as if this is a new track! It was innovative for its time and still fantastic!
